New Mexico Days
LAAZ ASUNM Daze 2008 Workshop, February 29 - March 1, 2008
The two-day “NEW MEXICO DAYS” workshop took place February 29 - March 1, 2008 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. This conference covered topics in Nonlinear Science including Mathematical Biology, Sea Ice Modeling, Turbulence, Ocean Waves. One key objective of this workshop was for it to be a forum where advanced Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty could present their research and networking. As such, the agenda was dominated by young scientists. It was also a regional event with participation from the University of Arizona (UA), Arizona State University (ASU), New Mexico Tech, UNM and LANL. On Friday, February 29, we had as our guest speaker Regents Prof. Vladimir Zakharov from the University of Arizona and on that evening all participants were invited to a reception at UNM Professor Alejandro Aceves’ house.
Ample publicity of this workshop (see website) assured great attendance. To maximize participation in the program, on Friday we included a poster session. In this session 10 posters were presented.
The support of the IAS was instrumental in that we were able to support travel for most students coming from Arizona. Needless to say, these Institutions were very grateful for such support and the local organizers heard only praise for the whole event.
The expectation is that a similar workshop will take place at either ASU or LANL in the winter of 2009. In fact, this event has a rich history dating some 25 years; the original concept was to be a LANL/Arizona event, which for the past 3 years has expanded to include ASU and UNM.
