ACCent: Astrophysics and Cosmology Center

ACCent is a focus-activity center within the Los Alamos National Laboratory's Institute for Advanced Studies, one of five joint LANL-academia institutes operating under the umbrella of the National Security Education Center at Los Alamos. The IAS promotes and enhances collaborations between LANL and three New Mexico universities (New Mexico State, New Mexico Tech, and the University of New Mexico). In addition, the IAS promotes strategic connections with the national and international scientific community in its thrust areas.

Groups in New Mexico, at universities, Labs, and observatories, are involved in many experimental, observational and theoretical programs in the areas of astrophysics and cosmology. ACCent aims to enhance cooperation and collaboration across this diverse landscape of activity as well as to identify new opportunities to combine forces in these areas.

ACCent activities are coordinated by Salman Habib (LANL) and the ACCent Steering Committee which has representatives from the four institutions. Current members are Przemyslaw (Przemek) Wozniak (ISR-1, LANL), Anatoly Klypin (Astronomy, NMSU), Steven T. Myers (NRAO),Lisa M. Young (Physics, NMT), and Gregory B. Taylor (Physics and Astronomy, UNM).

ACCent activities include sponsoring an annual meeting (with a special invited speaker) which will rotate through the IAS institutions, coordinating and funding (to the extent possible) inter-institutional sabbaticals, visitor programs, student fellowships and summer programs/workshops across the participating institutions, and identifying and pursuing research and funding opportunities. It will serve as a clearing house for information regarding these opportunities.

ACCent welcomes suggestions for activities it should undertake. Please contact your institutional representative.
